First Communion Portraits

January 24, 2025

I love all the sacraments that we hold so dear and precious in our Catholic Faith Tradition. Obviously as a Catholic Wedding photographer, the sacrament of Marriage is the sacrament I photograph the most.

While spring is most often a popular wedding season, it is also well known for another special day for many seven and eight year olds. I have the honor of photographing these children as they are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. I delight in their innocence, their excitement and joy as they are often just a week or two away from receiving our Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist.

I remember my First Communion. I remember that my mom made my dress, and that I accidentally wore her white tights on my special day, causing them to bunch at my ankles as I walked up to receive Communion. I also remember her taking my pictures in front of our family piano, and that I had on red nail polish that day.

The church that I made my First Communion in, while it is still a parish up in Wisconsin, the original church at St. Bernadette’s is not there anymore. I wish I would have had professional pictures taken of me in the church in that special dress that my mom made, on that very special day.

This is why when I take the portraits for my First Communion clients at our area churches, I take them in the church itself. I believe it is important to have the background of this sacred space also captured to be held in memory of each child as they look back on this sacramental day.
